I was approached by a local couple to build a table for a previously-unused spot in their home. They had recently moved into their house and found that their space couldn’t accomodate a standard dining table and chairs.

They had a vision of using the space as an area where friends could come over, relax and have a drink and chat while others are in the kitchen preparing food and snacks.

The Problem

To reach their vision, they needed a custom table measured to this awkward space.

The idea that was settled on was have two-to-three benches that create booth-type seating with a centre square table that would allow for enough seating-space. The benches that were chosen were taller than a normal dining table chair; this meant having to calculate an ideal height for the table. The table had to utilise a central leg; so the process included testing to ensure the it wasn’t going to tip over if someone leaned on the edge of the table top.

After the first-round of testing, I could tell it was going to be an issue. The way I resolved this problem was by introducing a square base to the leg.

Hurdles

Both the leg and table top were made of the same material. As the budget didn’t allow for using 100% hardwood, I looked into alternatives like veneered MDF. This often isn’t preferred as the wood shade and grain doesn’t match solid timber. In any case, Splintered doesn’t compromise on quality, so I made sure we found a place that makes the veneered MDF locally.

The couple are now enjoying the space in their home that would have been left useless. The result we achieved now allows them to host guests and make the home feel tailored.

Outcome

Do you have an awkward space thats being wasted?
